About the City of Toronto

The city of Toronto, with a population of 2.4 million people (4.5 million in the Greater Toronto Area), has something to offer everyone, whether for work or for play, for young or old. It is Canada’s largest city and is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Home to more than 80 different ethnic groups and more than 100 languages from across the globe, the city has developed distinct cultural neighbourhoods, including Greektown, Little Italy, Little India, and several Chinatowns.

There is no shortage of activities to keep residents and visitors occupied. Toronto is an arts and cultural centre, with events such as the International Film Festival and the International Festival of Authors, and a theatre scene that rivals London and New York. The city is also a thriving commercial center with endless shopping opportunities, from the upscale district of Yorkville to second hand shops for the bargain hunters. The city hosts events and festivals year-round, with something to satisfy every interest – the Molson Indy, Caribana, the Beaches International Jazz Festival, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, the Canadian National Exhibition, just to name a few. Toronto also has professional sports teams in baseball, basketball, soccer, football and hockey, and has many beautiful parks for those who want to enjoy the outdoors. And if you’ve built up an appetite after all these activities and you’re looking for something to eat, Toronto’s restaurant scene is booming.

The attractions don’t end at the city limits. There is plenty to see and do in the region surrounding Toronto. Within a short drive outside the city, you can visit Niagara Falls and the Niagara Wine Region or take in a play at the Stratford Festival, which attracts visitors from all over the world.
